Canada's Vancouver Island is dotted with charming settlements and one of its largest is the city of Courtenay, population approximately 22,000. But its size doesn't detract from its allure as a tourist destination. Down to earth and working class, Courtenay has a ton to offer visitors including its historical, cultural, and even prehistorical attractions; its close proximity to both Mount Washington and amazing beaches; great wildlife viewing and prime birdwatching; and a thriving local arts community with the summer festivals and events to prove it.

Courtenay Activities and Tourist Attractions

Tourism is a big part of Courtenay's local economy and the city boasts many popular tourist attractions. A big one is the Courtenay & District Museum & Paleontology Centre. Along with local history displays, the museum is home to the famous elasmosaur, a prehistoric ocean-dwelling predator whose fossilized remains were found along the local Puntledge River in 1988. Spring and summer fossil tours, a great kids activity, are available through the museum.

The Courtenay Riverway Heritage Walk is a perfect way to tour the city and learn about its history at the same time. Following the Courtenay River, the walk covers approximately 5 kilometers and information plaques are placed at intervals along the pathway. Along the way, you'll see Comox Bay, the small Courtenay Marina, and the colourful ultralight planes at the Courtenay Airpark.
