The Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine

When in St. Augustine, most vacationers make sure to visit the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. The fort was built by the Spanish and took over 23 years to finish, finally being completed in 1695. The fort itself is made from “coquina”, which is a hardened brick made of sand, sea shells and coral. The fort has a long history, having been occupied by the Spanish, British, then the Spanish again, only to later become part of the American Civil War and occupation at the hands of the Confederate Army. The fort itself was once featured on an episode of NBC’s “Unsolved Mysteries” as it has been rumored to be home to several ghosts.

St. Augustine’s “Ancient City”

Just across from the Castillo de San Marcos is the original city, or old district, of St. Augustine. The two original stone pillars welcome visitors as they stroll down the historical cobblestone streets, amid small shops and restaurants. Inside the old district, vacationers will find access to the oldest standing wooden school house in existence in North America. There are countless examples of the beauty of Spanish architecture both in the old district, and outside its immediate limits. St. Augustine has made it a point to preserve its rich history, and will not allow any construction, or massive buildings, to take away from the natural beauty of their historical landmark. Their appreciation for their heritage, and their Spanish influence, makes St. Augustine a must for any vacationer looking to step back in time.
