Ski In Out Condo

The lesser known charms of NZ white stuff are the club fields. These rough cut gems are non-profit organizations that welcome club membership and casual visitors to their slopes and offer accommodation. The club fields represent the soul of NZ ski field skiing but they are not about high speed quads, luxurious condos and cocktails for après ski. You’ll have to bring your own lunch or settle for a hot dog.

Craigieburn

Craigieburn, located a few hours from Christchurch is probably the most renowned of NZ’s non-commercial ski fields. It is based around a lift system of several rope tows that access intermediate to advanced terrain. The facilities and lift system may seem a little primitive but the skiing certainly isn’t.

North Island Skiing

On the Northern flanks of Mt Ruapehu in the North Island lies Whakapapa, NZ’s biggest ski field. You can reach the summit rim of this mighty volcano with an easy hike from the ski field (about 980 vertical feet) to gain panoramic views. It’s a popular first taste of off-piste skiing. The North Island is best known for its spring corn snow (a carpet-like surface) usually from September onwards, when a cycle of sunny days routinely follow clear nights.
